Work in progress

So, while my best friend is in China, collecting the wee one she's adopting, i've gone into "Aunt Suzanne" mode, and started working on a play mat for the kiddo (Mom decided she'd rather have a plunk-the-kid-on-the-floor mat than a cover, since she's already up to her eyeballs in blankets...).

I carved up five thrifted receiving blankets - four were actually a set, and the fifth just happened to have nearly the same colors.  It was supposed to be bigger, but i wasn't terribly thorough about working out the geometry first, and i ran out of the solid.  Sashing will make up some of the difference, and if i'm really lucky, i'll be able to match that blue:

I love the critter prints, too.  Obviously, it's still in need of some serious pressing, and the sashing will change the look of course.  I adapted the pattern from a quilted sewing machine cover i saw online somewhere.  The "batting" is likely to be cut from an old wool blanket i'm recycling.

Eh, at 15 months, he'll probably just make messes on it, but i'm hoping it'll make Mom's life a little easier (and i have, of course, made sure every element is highly washable...).

Picked up some lime green flannel for sashing, and a denim with green (olive-ish) pinstripes for the backing - it's a tight twill weave, so it should be easy to brush dirt off. Now i just need to figure out what i'm doing with them...
